(Adapted from the full article in the latest issue of Counter magazine)By Dr Judy Friedlander and Dr Tania Leimbach A number of Australian projects including the B&B Highway initiative showcase how biodiversity, appreciation of complexity and adaptive practices – through rewilding, regenerating and reimagining – enable life-sustaining food systems for the world’s growing populations. Rewilding with the b&b highway Rewilding encourages the return of species to diverse habitats and a new kind of ecological sensibility that accepts and welcomes cohabitation with fellow species. This work responds to the broader sixth mass extinction event we are living through and towards the…
PlantingSeeds’ B & B Highway project is proof positive of the growth of interest in native stingless bees. The tetragonula carbonaria has become a mascot for the regeneration movement in Australia and people are clamouring for hives and bees. It’s not just the spoonful of honey people desire – it’s this little bee’s ability to pollinate, create magical spiral hive structures and more. How to keep up with the demand for artificial hives? Nejra Salihbegovic travels the information spiral… For the past 30 plus years, Australian stingless beekeeping – known alternatively as ‘meliponiculture’ – has developed into a thriving industry.…
Earlier this year, we asked all our followers to help us by voting in the Australian Ethical Community Grants program for 2020. Thanks to everyone who did vote, we were awarded a grant to fund The Hive - a training program for refugees with a focus on beekeeping and gardening. In collaboration with The Arab Council, PlantingSeeds will offer 20 places to individuals looking to develop skills in native beekeeping, carpentry and garden design. The pilot of the free course, to be run in the first quarter of 2021 will take place in South Western Sydney with economic and social…
Our inititive and the work we’re doing in Ryde with the B & B Highway was recently featured on ABC News Online. Read the article here.
Being a voice and advocate for our wildlife and fellow species involves ground up and top down actions. PlantingSeeds is working hard to ‘plant seeds’ through projects such as the B & B Highway which creates pollinator gardens in public schools and other community centres. However, legislative and governmental actions to protect our biodiversity are also vitally important for those species without a voice. And in advocating for wildlife conservation, plant conservation is equally important. Over 1,000 plant and animal species in NSW alone are threatened. The destruction of habitat and climate change work to compromise our biodiversity. We present…
The Australian Tetragonula bee genus is in the news – even making a ‘Royal’ appearance through a journal article just published in the Royal Society Interface. Scientists are fascinated with this particular native stingless bee’s hive comb structure. Its wonderful spiral crystal shape is unique to bees and is becoming a source of fascination for entomologists around the world. (The B & B Highway stingless beehives are made by the Tetragonula.) The journal article entitled: ‘The bee Tetragonula builds its comb like a crystal’, theorises that the Tetragonula Australian bee may be following the same rules that crystals use to…
